As consumers cozy up to agentic commerce, retailers face big decisions
The retail sector is entering a pivotal moment with the rise of agentic commerce, projected to drive up to $1 trillion in US B2C revenue by 2030, as Large Language Model (LLM) providers like OpenAI move to centralize the consumer purchasing journey. Andrei Papancea, CEO and cofounder of a conversational technology company, emphasizes that a "very tiny window"exists for brands to act, as LLM providers are rapidly positioning themselves to "own the entire funnel". He warns that while centralization offers a path to the masses, major brands aiming to control their "brand pulse"will need more than generic, out-of-the-box solutions; they must invest in "tailored engineering and thought,"or even develop their own proprietary AI interfaces, to maintain customer control.
